> Retrieval-Augmented Generation is easy to demo and hard to ship. Notes from wiring RAG into sajjad.ai  -  chunking, embeddings, and grounding answers people actually trust.

Retrieval-Augmented Generation looks deceptively simple in a tutorial: embed some text, drop it in a vector store, stuff the top matches into a prompt. Getting it to behave in production  -  across English, Arabic, and Urdu  -  is a different exercise entirely.

## Chunking is a product decision

The naive approach is to split documents every N characters. That destroys meaning at boundaries and returns half-sentences. I moved to structure-aware chunking that respects headings and paragraphs, with overlap so context is not lost at the seams. The right chunk size depends on the document type, so it became a tunable rather than a constant.

## Retrieval quality beats model size

A bigger model cannot fix bad context. Most of the wins came from improving what I retrieved: better embeddings, hybrid keyword-plus-semantic search, and re-ranking the candidates before they ever reached the prompt. When retrieval is good, even a smaller model answers well.

## Ground every answer, and say when you cannot

The fastest way to lose trust is a confident, wrong answer. I made the system cite the chunks it used and explicitly fall back to "I do not have that in the provided documents" when retrieval confidence is low. Users forgive "I do not know" far more readily than a fabricated fact.

## Takeaway

RAG is a systems problem, not a prompt. Treat retrieval, chunking, and grounding as first-class engineering  -  the model is the last and smallest part of the stack.

### Clean Architecture in .NET, without the dogma

> Clean Architecture pays off on long-lived systems  -  but only if you apply it with judgement. How I use it on real .NET Core projects without drowning in boilerplate.

Clean Architecture gets cited like scripture and applied like a checklist. After years of shipping .NET Core systems that other people maintain, I have a more pragmatic view: the goal is replaceable edges and a protected core, not a folder for every noun.

## Protect the core, not your ego

The point is that business rules should not depend on the database, the web framework, or any third-party SDK. When I integrated OpenAI, DeepSeek, and Ollama behind a single interface, swapping providers became a configuration change rather than a rewrite. That is the real payoff.

## Boilerplate is a cost, spend it deliberately

Not every CRUD endpoint needs three layers of abstraction. I reserve the full pattern for the parts of the system that genuinely change  -  integrations, pricing, domain rules  -  and keep simple things simple. Architecture should reduce future cost, not inflate present cost for its own sake.

## Repositories and the EF question

A repository over Entity Framework can be redundant  -  EF is already a unit of work. I add one when I want to hide query complexity or keep the domain ignorant of the ORM, and skip it when it would just be a pass-through.

## Takeaway

Use Clean Architecture as a tool for managing change, not as a rulebook. Protect what changes, keep the rest simple, and your future self will thank you.

I spent the better part of seven years working remotely and across distributed teams, first at Argaam in Riyadh and later leading digital projects at UBT in Jeddah. Remote work rewards a specific set of habits that are easy to underrate.

## Write things down

In a distributed team, the written record is the team. Decisions, trade-offs, and the reasoning behind them belong in a place others can find without asking. Good writing is not overhead; it is how remote teams stay aligned without constant meetings.

## Own outcomes, not hours

Nobody is watching you type, and that is the point. The engineers who thrive remotely are the ones who take a problem, drive it to a result, and surface blockers early. Being recognised as Employee of the Year during fully remote service came down to owning outcomes, not logging time.

## Let the work speak

When you are not in the room, your shipped work is your reputation. Reliable systems, clear commits, and dependable delivery build more trust than any status update. That is also why I keep this site and my projects current  -  the work should make the case before I do.

## Takeaway

Remote engineering is less about tools and more about discipline: communicate in writing, own results, and ship work you would be happy to be judged by.

### Digitalizing university certificate issuance at UBT

> How we designed and delivered a secure digital certificate issuance platform, replacing a fully manual institutional workflow at the University of Business and Technology.

In January 2024, we launched the UBT Digital Certificate Platform, moving the university's certificate issuance from a slow, paper-based workflow to an automated, digitally-signed system.

## The Problem
Before this project, generating, verifying, and distributing academic and administrative certificates required manual approvals, physical signatures, and in-person collection. This process was time-consuming and hard to audit.

## The Solution
We built a secure, centralized web application backed by custom ASP.NET Core APIs. The platform handles:
- Automated certificate template generation.
- Digital approval workflows for department heads.
- Secure digital signing and verification.
- Instant PDF generation and student email delivery.

## Outcomes
The platform completely replaced the manual process, saving hundreds of hours of administrative work and allowing students to download verified certificates instantly.

In February 2022, I was named Employee of the Year 2021 at Argaam. 

This recognition was for my work leading a remote team of software engineers. During a challenging period of fully remote operations, we successfully architected and shipped the Argaam Data API platform (powering corporate partnerships and internal systems across Saudi Arabia and the GCC) and delivered Argaam Charts.

Managing remote engineering teams requires clear technical direction and a focus on ownership. This award is a testament to the dedication of the entire engineering team at Argaam during that year.
